Here is Russell’s best on-day side.
What do you think?
1. Gilchrist – best one day cricketer ever – from any country, not just Australia.
2. Mark Waugh – fantastic bat, good bowler (medium pace and off-spin) and sensational fieldsman – I was at the G for his 172 the best one day batting performance I have seen live.
3. Ricky Ponting – best Aust batsman since Bradman, just look at his record – brilliant fieldsman – has bowled – I pretty sure he scored a 150 against the World XI (Tsunami appeal game) 2nd best one day batting performance I have seen live.
4. Dean Jones – from memory hit 3 consecutive tons for Aust in the 50 over format – Great fielder, he did keep and bowl.
5. Steve Waugh (C) Sorry Ricky he just got the nod as captain – ferocious competitor that wouldn’t give an inch, the sort of guy you would want in the trenches next to you (no pun intended, go to war with)- could
bat, bowl and field.
6. Michael Bevan – much maligned – best middle order batsman ever – you could feel safe if he was batting he would get Aust over the line.
7. Shane Watson – if not hampered by injury his batting & bowling stats would and perhaps will get better.
8. Shane Warne – Best spinner in any form of the game – could swing a bat.
9. Brett Lee – At his best was devastating even though he had an expensive economy rate, great statistics – he was a wicket taker – handy bat.
10. Dennis Lillee – Struggled pick the bowlers, my last player picked – my boyhood idol – honestly can’t remember him playing one-day cricket.
11. Glenn McGrath – Brilliant bowler with sensational control 12. M. Hussey – Unlucky to miss out, I love the Huss, can bat, bowl and field – Bevan just pipped him
Unlucky
13. Allan Border- I loved him but he couldn’t force S. Waugh, Bevan or M.
Hussey out of the team.
14. Matthew Hayden – Struggled early against the might of the West Indies – Flat track bully.
